Oppose Pet Prohibition in Oakland!

Animal rights activists are increasing pressure on local governments across California to ban all pet sales at licensed pet stores. Oakland could be the next target.

These bans would include fish, birds, reptiles, and small mammals.

Similar restrictions in other jurisdictions have driven consumers toward less regulated sources, including online marketplaces and out-of-state sellers where transparency and oversight are limited. Pet sale bans will also cause wildlife trafficking to supply the pet “black market” if local businesses are banned from selling pets.

Responsible pet retailers provide consumers with a responsible option to get a pet and play an important role in education and animal care. They are also regulated and inspected by the state.

Oakland should prioritize practical policies that support responsible pet ownership and reject policies that diminish the human-animal bond.
