This week, Steven Constant DVM, DACT, and Arnold Goldman DVM, MPH, published an op-ed in the Boston Herald warning lawmakers against a proposed pet shop ban in Massachusetts. According to the veterinarians, eliminating retail pet sales wouldn’t eliminate demand for animals. Instead, it could push consumers toward shady corners of the internet or black markets where animal safety takes a back seat.

“In our professions, knowing an animal’s history can be enormously valuable. Vaccination records, health screenings, breeder information, and other documentation help us understand an animal’s health and make informed decisions about its care,” writes Constant and Goldman. “Much of this would go away under SB 3028.”
