Stop DeKalb County’s Pet Sale Ban
DeKalb County officials are considering a new “pet prohibition” ordinance that would ban pet shops from selling dogs, cats, and rabbits.
If adopted, this ordinance would:
- Push families toward risky online transactions and pet scams
- Reduce transparency and accountability in pet sourcing
- Do nothing to stop irresponsible breeders operating outside the law
Responsible pet stores provide consumers with important protections, documentation, and transparency that are absent in the black market. Policies like this simply shift demand away from regulated businesses and into less accountable channels.
DeKalb County should focus on enforcing existing animal welfare laws and promoting responsible pet ownership, not adopting broad “pet prohibition” policies that create unintended consequences for consumers, businesses, and pets alike.
Tell DeKalb County officials to oppose Ordinance 2026-0728 and protect responsible pet ownership, consumer choice, and common-sense animal welfare policies.
