Director, Government Affairs

The Pet Advocacy Network, a national trade association engaged in government affairs and advocacy on behalf of the responsible pet care community, seeks to hire an experienced government relations professional for the position of Director of Government Affairs. This position is based in Alexandria, VA.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Managing all aspects of legislative/regulatory portfolio including tracking legislation, writing comments and giving testimony, meeting with lawmakers, coalition building and management, and managing contract lobbyists in approximately 15 states.
  • Building and maintaining strategic relationships with allied organizations, government officials, industry partners, and stakeholders to support the organization’s advocacy and policy agenda.
  • Working with 1-2 junior government affairs team members to provide guidance on legislative, engagement, grassroots, and lobbying strategies.
  • Serving as staff lead for one or more committees addressing issues related to specific animal sectors and/or zoonoses, including monthly conference calls, providing leadership, guidance, and support to industry on animal health, legislative, and regulatory issues.
  • Working with communications staff to develop and distribute communication, education, and public awareness tools to support the overall legislative and regulatory strategy.
  • Serving as a liaison to coalition partners and governmental entities as needed.
  • Some travel required (face-to-face meetings with lawmakers, regulators, and staff, providing testimony, and attending industry events).

Professional Experience:

  • Five to seven years of trade association, government relations, Congressional, or state legislative staff experience.
  • Experience working in policy areas such as agriculture, taxes, environment, business regulations, and retail and consumer issues.
  • Experience managing legislative and grassroots operations.
  • Experience with grassroots advocacy tools (such as CQ Roll Call or Fiscal Note).
  • Excellent verbal, written, research, and organizational skills, including supervisory experience preferred.

Coordinator, Government Affairs and Research

The Pet Advocacy Network, a national trade association engaged in government affairs and advocacy on behalf of the responsible pet care community, seeks to hire an experienced government relations professional for the position of Government Affairs and Research Coordinator. This position is based in Alexandria, VA.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Assisting government affairs staff in developing communication, education and public awareness tools to support the overall legislative and regulatory strategy
  • Assisting with legislative and regulatory research
  • Assisting government affairs staff on all aspects of the association’s legislative and regulatory portfolio
  • Preparing materials for and participation in quarterly Board meetings and in industry events throughout the year
  • Managing database and outreach, including website/IT support, for grassroots advocates and association members
  • Managing applications for our avian care certification program, including new applications and renewals
  • Assisting with special projects as needed

Professional Experience:

  • One to three years of trade association, Capitol Hill or state legislative staff experience
  • Experience coordinating office administrative tasks
  • Experience with database and/or membership management software, as well as web management systems (such as WordPress and Drupal)
  • Excellent writing and organizational skills
  • Undergraduate degree in relevant subject area is desirable
