The Trentonian published a guest op-ed from two New Jersey pet store owners warning that proposed legislation to ban retail pet sales could eliminate consumer protections and push families toward unregulated online sellers. The authors argue that repealing the state’s Pet Purchase Protection Act and closing regulated businesses would reduce transparency, increase scams, and leave families with fewer safeguards when purchasing a pet.

“Removing the regulated system that protects animals and families would close responsible small businesses and push families toward unregulated online sellers, where scams and abuse are much more likely to go unnoticed,” the authors write.

“Animal welfare and consumer protection are not opposing goals. In fact, they depend on each other.”
